Most international legal frameworks that aim at protecting biodiversity place great importance on educational measures (e.g. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Art. 13a). However, some of the world's regions are more affected by biodiversity loss than others (which are so-called biodiversity hotspots). Resource dilemmas are serious threats to biodiversity, especially in such regions. In resource dilemmas, natural resources are depleted for economic interest, which is, in many cases, required income. Therefore, economic and social aspects must be considered should biodiversity loss be completely understood. However, little is known thus far about learning prerequisites of pupils living in an industrial country, such as Germany, and in a biodiversity hotspot, such as Chile. This dissertation focuses on two important learning prerequisites being: i) pupils' perceptions of biodiversity, biodiversity loss and resource dilemmas, and ii) pupils' commitment to protect biodiversity. Firstly, a qualitative, in-depth interview study was conducted that investigated sixteen to eighteen-year-old Chilean and German learners' perception of biodiversity and its loss (n=24). As a central result, an ecological typeʺ, an economic typeʺ and a balanced typeʺ emerged from the data, showing different perspectives of biodiversity and its loss. Overall, Chilean pupils seemed to have greater difficulties in recognising social aspects of biodiversity loss. Surprisingly, pupils who concentrated on ecological aspects, applied weak ecological knowledge more often. However, some pupils did succeed in integrating ecological, economic, and social aspects. Based on the suggestion in the literature that conservation objectives should be linked with local development objectives to successfully realise community- based conservation, and little available knowledge about corresponding projects, we set off to deepen our comprehension about how these projects work in the field. We investigate cases that were from the outset framed as having two objectives; these cases are combined projects of flood prevention and river restoration in Switzerland. Our aim was to better understand the role of the multi-level governance setting for the success of these projects The corresponding objective was to identify, what role legal regulations, administrative conditions, available financial resources and other factors from different levels (confederation, canton and municipalities) play for the realisation of these projects. We investigated these projects by conducting personal interviews with project leaders and stakeholders that participated in five collaborative planning processes; for each case we interviewed at least five participants. We find that the difficulty to 'gain space for the river' was the main stumbling block for the planning and implementation of these multipurpose projects. Federal and cantonal regulations and requirements clearly shaped these projects and the corresponding institutions exercised the possible control based upon financial resources. Existing regulations turned out to be flexible instruments and adaptable, when they had been hindering emerging and desirable practices in river engineering. These regulations also permitted considerable autonomy to the local actors to arrange and negotiate their concerns in the projects. Ein Suizid in der Klinik – am Ort des maximalen Schutzes für den Betroffenen und der Entlastung von Angehörigen – ist besonders belastend für alle Beteiligten. Diese Arbeitshilfe stellt das aktuelle Wissen über Suizid im Krankenhaus oder anderen psychosozialen Einrichtungen dar und macht praxiserprobte Vorschläge, wie Begleitung und Unterstützung aussehen können. Suizidnachbesprechungen etablieren Wenn ein Suizid an dem Ort geschieht, der als Ort des Schutzes für den Betroffenen und als Entlastung von Verantwortung für die Angehörigen gedacht war, dann bleibt von einem solchen Ereignis niemand unberührt. Die Autoren haben deshalb die Suizidnachbesprechung als festen Bestandteil der Nachbearbeitung von Suizidereignissen in ihrer Klinik etabliert. Dabei geht es nicht um Kontrolle oder Schuldzuweisung, sondern um ein unmittelbares Lernen aus der Situation, um eine angemessene Würdigung des Geschehenen und um die Fürsorge für die Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter, die Angehörigen oder andere Beteiligte. Neben einer knappen Zusammenfassung zum Wissen über den Suizid allgemein und im psychiatrischen Krankenhaus im Besonderen wird ein Konzept zum Umgang mit dem Krankenhaussuizid vorgestellt. Mit seinen transparenten Informationsregeln, festen Routinen und klaren Abläufen kann es auf viele psychosoziale Einrichtungen übertragen werden.

The design of landscapes in botanical gardens varies between more structured habitats (engineered habitats [EHs]) and nature-orientated habitats (NOHs). Little is known so far about young people's perception of NOH and EH landscapes in botanical gardens. To address this question, the authors took 28 adolescents to two differently designed settings in an exemplary botanical garden. The authors assessed landscape preferences through marks that the test persons placed on the landscapes photographs, scenic beauty estimates, and accompanying interviews. As a result, the authors found a general preference for more structured landscapes among young people. Implications for biodiversity education in botanical gardens will be discussed.
